In conjunction with its investigation into air cargo price-fixing, the U.S. Department of Justice also investigated the fixing of passenger ticket prices for international flights.  According to regulators, between January 2000 and July 2006, carriers conspired to suppress and eliminate competition by fixing fuel surcharges, wholesale prices to travel agents, and unpublished passenger fares.

 

Enforcement Highlights:

  • Four carriers have pled guilty to air passenger price-fixing, resulting in over $520 million in fines.  This number includes combination fines paid by three carriers for both air cargo and air passenger price-fixing.
